A new way to meet other introverts. No assigned reading. Optional mingling afterwards!
What I did
I attended a handful of silent reading parties in the Bay Area and wanted to bring the concept to Imperial Valley, but I couldn't do it alone. With the help of my friend Daniela Vega, we started a local chapter of the Silent Book Club and have hosted events throughout the year. Up next: a bookish White Elephant in December!
Why I did it
There's a lack of third spaces and opportunities to engage with readers (Imperial Valley's first bookstore opened on November 2024), and the reading community is also somewhat introverted, so low-key events like these make meeting new folks a little less intimidating. The SBC has been a catalyst for meeting other reading groups in the Valley. Bonus: getting to design a flyer for each event feels like a treat.
